In 1932, Herman J. Mankiewicz, who later wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane, wrote The Mad Dog of Europe. The film was about a German-Jewish family facing the rise of Hitler and Nazism. Hollywood studios never made the film because of political pressure and business interests. Its story remains relevant today as ideological divisions grow around the world. In this new documentary which spans the 1930s, Rubika Shah shines a light on Mankiewicz's revolutionary screenplay, and the myriad reasons it was never produced by Hollywood.
Rubika Shah is a British-Saudi filmmaker who directed White Riot (2020), a documentary about the Rock Against Racism movement, which earned a BAFTA nomination. She later directed The Mad Dog of Europe, based on Herman J. Mankiewicz’s anti-Nazi screenplay.
